The main entrance of Shaniwar Wada, Delhi Darwaza, is massive and strategically designed for defense. Thick wooden doors reinforced with iron spikes were used to protect against enemy attacks. The walls surrounding the fort are constructed from durable stone, highlighting strong engineering techniques of the 18th century.
Built under Baji Rao I, Shaniwar Wada originally had seven floors. Though the upper structures were destroyed in a fire, the foundation remains provide insight into its grandeur.
Situated in Pune, Shaniwar Wada’s inner courtyard once contained beautiful gardens and fountains. The remains of the lotus-shaped fountain are still visible and attract attention from visitors.
The fort served as the headquarters of the Maratha Empire administration, making its design both functional and symbolic.
